The final purpose of the puzzle must be carefully thought of as it represents the pulling force that keeps the quest or puzzle solver in motion. Ignoring the end is a fatal mistake.

Each puzzle or quest leaves a memory trace in the mind of the solver. The power of this trace (intensity and persistence of thought) is controlled by how well integrated the final answer is and how surprising it was at that time.

About this last point I should say a bit more. The duration of this memory trace is given by how many open possibilities we leave on the way, clues that were not used, leads that were never followed. The duration and the intensity of a puzzle or quest are not related, this allows a very fine control of the message sent. Tuning it for a too high intensity it will trigger the brain defense mechanism and a possible message will never be successfully delivered or revealed. If the Intensity is low the duration is very long. One could use a puzzle to control informations that will became clear to the solvers mind only much later and will look like coming from his own intuition. This is also known as subliminal message and is part of the arsenal of tools that mastering questions and answers unlocks.
